Conference Instructors
Bruce A. Barker - is President of Dream Home Consultants, LLC., a Jacksonville, Florida based consulting and building inspection firm. He serves Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia. During over 36 years in the construction and building inspection profession, he has built more than 110 custom homes, and has inspected more than 3,000 homes. Mr. Barker is a certified Residential Combination Inspector by the International Code Council, and is a licensed contractor in multiple states. Mr. Barker is the author of books including: NHIE Home Inspection Manuals, Everybody's Building Code, and books in the Black & Decker series, such as Codes for Homeowners and Deck Codes and Standards. He is an instructor for home inspectors and contractors. Mr. Barker has served as a subject matter expert for the National Home Inspector Examination (NHIE), and has served on the NHIE exam outline development committee. He has also served as a subject matter expert for Florida contractor license exams. Mr. Barker has served as ASHI Standards Committee Chair, a Director, Treasurer, and President.

Shannon Cory - is Owner of 5 Star Environmental Services LLC. and has been performing residential inspections in the metro Atlanta areas since 1998. Most of Shannon’s success has been from his innovative reporting methods, marketing techniques and continuing educational programs. Some of his past back ground, which helped him make the decision to become a home inspector was while growing up in North Alabama Shannon assisted his grandfather who built custom homes. Due to the quality of the construction many of these homes appear still structurally sound today. Prior to moving to Georgia in 1979, Shannon spent 13 ½ years with Lamont Doherty Geological Observatory of Columbia University as a technician and research engineer building structures and seismic sites around the world. Shannon is a member of or holds certifications in or certificates in the following: Building Officials and Code Administrators International (BOCA), Exterior Design Institute(EDI), and IRC combination inspector

Dr. Terry J. Holder, Ph.D. - has been a licensed residential home builder since 1998. I also taught building science to high school students for over 25 years. I passed the National Home Inspectors Exam and the ASHI standards of practice Exam and I am licensed as a home inspector in the state of Alabama. I have a B.S., Masters and a Doctorate from Auburn University and a Ed Specialist Degree from the University of Montevallo. I recently retired from education.
Mike Strayer - SSL&J Building, LLC is a construction consulting and construction expert witness firm specializing in residential and commercial construction defects, water intrusion, building code compliance, construction contracts, cost estimating, and litigation support for construction cases. The firm was founded by Rayford F. Smith (1937-2021) a seasoned construction expert for over 5 decades.
The cases in which our firm is routinely involved reflect a wide variety of construction related issues such as building envelope and claddings, roofing, framing, concrete construction, ADA, Chinese drywall, water and termite damage, cost estimating on various concerns, and mine & quarry blasting/subsidence damage claims Our expert witness services are utilized in litigation support, depositions, meditation, arbitration and at trial. In addition to these consulting services, we also work with homeowners and business owners on water intrusion/building envelope issues, EIFS inspections and general construction troubleshooting.
We serve all of Alabama and neighboring states. We are licensed in Alabama as Residential Home Builders.
